How to Make Your Bed Like a Top Class Hotel

Getting into a smooth clean comfortable bed is one of the joys of staying in a top class hotel. Why not recreate that experience every night at home.

1. Choose a quality mattress

Hotels would not survive for long if their beds had the reputation for giving guests backache. A firm mattress is best. If you prefer a softer mattress add a mattress pad which molds itself to your body for comfort.

2. Keep Your Mattress in Good Condition

If you have a good mattress but it hasn't been flipped or cleaned in a while then now is a good time to do that. To clean the mattress sprinkle it liberally with baking soda (you may need more than one pot) leave for a few hours and then vacuum up the baking soda. Spray the bed with fabric freshener to freshen it up too.

Flip your mattress every few months so that it wears evenly. Mattresses are designed to last about 10 years - but not if you leave them on one side all the time.

To protect your mattress and keep it clean get a mattress cover - they are quite cheap to buy and can be laundered in the washing machine (far easier than cleaning your mattress).

3. Smooth Clean Sheets

Most hotels don't go in for fancy bedding ensembles but they always have quality sheets. These are the kind made of super fine cotton with a high thread count which feels smooth to the touch. Only quality sheets can survive the high temperatures of commercial laundries and come out looking good wash after wash.

Make sure your sheets are fresh, crisp and smooth - launder as soon as they lose their crisp fresh feel and make sure you iron them nice and smooth.

Plain white will give you the authentic hotel feeling. Colors don't survive the rigors of the hotel laundry either.

4. Plump Pillows

If your pillows have seen better days, and are stained and lumpy, replace them. If they are just a bit flat, running them through the tumble drier with a dryer sheet to freshen them and plump them up a bit may help. (Check the care instructions first). If all else fails try two pillows in one pillow sham to give a plumper look.

Pillow shams like sheets need to be smooth crisp and clean. Just imagine your cheek laying down on that cool smooth surface as you sink into a great night's sleep.

5. Duvet or Comforter

A duvet placed in a washable crisp cover to match the sheets (i.e. pure white) is all you need to keep you warm and cosy. Alternatively a crisp top sheet and comforter will do the same job.

6. Top Cover

Cover the bed with a decorative cover that you remove before you get into bed - this will mean that the cover does not need to be constantly laundered. Some hotels do not use a top cover for hygiene reasons - there is no time to launder between guests - and just leave the bed with a pure crisp white look. If that suits your room décor than that's great too.

So those are the elements that make a bed in a top class hotel so comfortable. Now all you need is someone to turn back the sheets before you get into bed and leave a chocolate on your pillow. Sweet dreams!

How to Remove Pine Sap From Your Hands

On my first Christmas as a mature adult, I was overjoyed when I bought my first Christmas tree and brought it home to my apartment. I thought to myself, "I will be decorating my first tree at last and be able to show my family that I can handle myself easily." That was before disaster strikes me.

I got pine sap all over my hands, my floor, my car, and even on my coat! Where is a mother when you need one? Nope, I promised myself I will never ask for any help from my Mom to show her that I am a big girl now, a lady in fact. I just didn't expect that getting and decorating a Christmas tree isn't as easy as they portray it on the television. There is much more work attached to it than what I presumed earlier.

Now, how do I get started cleaning up this pine sap mess? I better start with my hands and work my way up to the other infected pine sapped items. I did the basic thing to do in removing the gunk from my hands by using soap and water but to no avail it didn't remove the pine sap. The gooey pine sap is starting to harden, what am I to do?

The best place to find answers is the internet so I quickly ran to my room and accessed the information highway. The first solution to my problem was Crisco, a brand of shortening. Unfortunately, I am not fond of baking or cooking so I moved on to the next answer which is butter or margarine. To my luck, I just ran out of butter. The post even says that butter works well with pine sap on cars and clothes, I will have to buy that for my other pine sapped issues and for later use. I thought to myself, "This is going to be a long day..."

Another answer was from a guy and he said gasoline works well with removing pine sap, eeew! There's no way I'm going to dunk my hands into some old smelly gasoline. I need to search for more answers. What's this? A bug's spray to remove pine sap from almost anything, double eeew!!! Never will I spray my hands with that.

I think I have found the best solution for my problem, either an alcohol or an alcohol gel hand sanitizer. I don't have the alcohol right now but I stink I stashed a hand sanitizer somewhere. I searched high and low until I finally found it in one of my handbags.

This is the moment of truth. I poured a couple of squirts in my hands and rubbed them together. Magically, the pine sap began to dissolve in front of me. The gooey sap turned into some kind of glue residue which can be easily eliminated by rinsing your hands with water.

Now that my problem is gone I can continue on with the other things affected by the pine sap and then finally decorate my Christmas tree. I used the sanitizer on the pine sapped floor and rubbed it with a mild scouring pad. It worked! My car sitting on the street had some droplets of pine sap all over the trunk area. I squirted a few drops on every sap and rubbed it with my fingers. Of course I needed water to wash down the residue. The pine sap instantly vanished as well. For my coat, I think I'd rather use butter than the hand sanitizer because it might ruin the color.

Removing pine sap is easier than I thought, thanks to the power of information highway, the internet. I won't be caught off guard next year during Christmas tree shopping time. I will make sure that I have my alcohol gel hand sanitizer ready.

11 Simple Steps to Recover Dining Room Chairs

As an upholsterer for over 40 years I have often been asked by people how they can upholster their own dining room chairs. I tell them it is not really that difficult to do once they know the upholstery process of doing things.

I will now go through the process so you can follow the methods most upholsterers use.

Now there are many different kinds of dining room chairs on the market, but the techniques for recovering them follows the same stages.

First thing to do is decide what kind of material you want to use, there are plenty of shops around selling off cuts and end of rolls. This is a good place to start if you want to cut down on costs.

But a warning: make sure the fabric is upholstery material or you are just doing a lot of work for nothing. Using the wrong kind of fabric will mean you will be doing it all again in a year or so. Upholstery fabric has a stronger weave than what is call soft furnishing fabric which is only good for light usage not for putting on chairs.

If you are unsure you can always go to a local upholsterer and see what they have, you may pay a few dollars more but at least it will be proper upholstery fabric.

Secondly how much fabric do you need? This depends on how many chairs you have and how big they are. But a basic rule is you need about 3 metres- 3.5 yards of normal (plain) 54inch- 140cm wide fabric to do 4 dining chairs, seats and backs. If it is high back chairs you can add a couple more metres just to be on the safe side.

For this article I will assume your chairs are the standard kind with the screw off envelope backs and bordered seats. If not the methods explained here will still work but you will have to improvise a bit.

1. First thing to do is turn the chair upside down and unscrew the seats from the frame, now unscrew the back as well. The seats will be easy to unscrew but the back screws maybe hidden under a plug that has to be removed first.

2. Once you have them unscrewed start to take the old covers off, you can use a flat screw driver to remove the staples if you don't have proper staple removing tools.

3. Now that you have the old cover off you can use them to make templates with. When using old covers as templates make sure you mark them where they sew together, a stroke with a pen on the top and the boarder around the seat will do as a mark. Mark at least three times front sides and back if you like. Do the same for the backs.

4. Now you can unpick the old stitching and separate the fabric. Once you unpick a seat or a back make sure you keep them together so you don't lose any parts, roll them up together is the best way.

5. Once this is done you can roll-out your fabric on a table or even a hard floor. Place the old covers on the fabric and mark around them with some chalk, normal blackboard chalk will do. Just make sure the covers are nice and flat and don't move when you mark around them.

6. Once you have them marked out cut around the chalk mark, stay to the outside of the chalk line when cutting. You can just cut one to try if you are unsure. Also don't forget to mark the new covers so you know where your sewing marks are.

7. Now you can sew the new covers together just line up the sewing marks you put on earlier and sew around the fabric. Do just one first to see how they fit.

8. Once this is all done it is time to put them back on the frames. As most dining chairs have square seats or at least square front corners start by putting the cover on the corners. Once you have the cover on just make sure the corners are nice and square before stapling.

9. Now start by putting in a temporary staple in the corners trying to keep the border at the same height. Once this is done put a staple in the middle of the front back and sides, so you should have the four corners and the four sides with a staple in them. Now staple the sides, making sure you keep the cover even, then the back and then the front: leave the corners to last. Once you have secured the sides finish off the corners doing the front ones first. You should now have the seat all stapled back together; you can now put a bottom calico on if you like.

10. You then do the backs. Most backs are envelope backs so you only have a row of staples along the bottom of the back. Start by straining the sides first and stapling them. Then do the middle of the outside back and finishing one side then the other. Cut off any excess fabric, and then do the front of the back, do it the same way as the outside back. If you are in doubt just look how the original was done and follow it.

11. Now you are ready to screw them together and you now have some brand new covers on your chairs.

If your dog licks excessively, you can easily stop this behavior once you understand the root cause of his excessive licking.

Medical- A dog that is excessively licking may be doing this because of a medical condition such as a skin allergy, dry skin, irritation to the pads on his paws as a result of contact with ice, snow or the salt on a road. Behavioral- Non medical causes for excessive licking in dogs are most likely behaviorally based. Many dog trainers feel that the cause is anxiety. Your dog may lick excessively so that someone will notice him, as a show of affection, or to give you a message. That message in dog language can mean a number of things, such as , I want to go for a walk, I love you, I wanna play, I want food, I feel anxious, or I miss you and want you to come back. This last one manifests itself as separation anxiety when you are not at home.

2 Ways to Stop Your Dog's Excessive Licking Today

Once you identify the specific root cause of your dog's excessive licking you can take steps to stop it. Let's use separation anxiety as an example. If you conclude that your dog licks excessively when you leave the house, you can easily correct this behavior.

Start leaving he house for short intervals without making a fuss when you leave. No announcements or good byes. Just leave and come back without fanfare in 5 minutes. Then repeat the process and extends it to 10 minutes. Do it again, this time for 20 minutes, then again for an hour. Before long you will be able to leave the house and return a few hours to several hours later without your dog reacting by excessive licking.

Another simple technique you can use to stop your dog's excessive licking is to divert his attention. When he starts to lick his paws, your face, the floor or anything at all, catch his attention and throw a ball for him to fetch. He'll soon forget about licking because he's having more fun playing ball !.

Whether your cat is old or young, male or female, anxious or mellow, he or she can get the idea that peeing anywhere but the litterbox is a good thing. Many frustrated humans in the past and present have tried nearly everything to figure out why the cat does this - and, of course, to solve the problem.

Make the litterbox more accessible so that your kitty can get in and out. The litterbox itself might be a problem. If you have more than one cat, you might need to put out additional litterboxes. The type of litter and how much of it you use can be problems. You should also change the cat litter and thoroughly scrub the litterbox. The plastic tends to absorb urine smells, which can turn off housecats. Sometimes cats will act out by peeing all over your favorite things. This can be a sign that they're unhappy about something. Try giving your cat more (positive) attention. Extra playtime with his favorite toy can cure the behavioral issue. You can also ask your vet about a product that will help soothe your kitty: Feliway is one example. Tomcats often spray anything that they wish to mark as their own territory. Sterilization can improve this problem. Elderly kitties can suffer from feline dementia. They honestly don't realize that they're doing something wrong when they pee all over your clean laundry. Buy housebreaking pads - the disposable kind that people use with puppies - and put them down where your kitty pees the most often. This won't convince her to use the litterbox, but cleanup will be much easier compared to what you're doing now.

You should do a few things when your kitty decides to mark something in your house.

Never hit the cat or rub her nose in the mess. Cats aren't like human children: they don't understand that what they do is wrong. You can deter behavior as the cat is doing it, but trying to teach the cat after the fact doesn't work very well. Instead of scolding kitty afterward, catch her in the act and spritz her with tap water from a spray bottle. Completely clean the marked territory. Even if you can't smell the cat pee, the cat will. That's her sign to continue peeing there. Visit the pet store for a product that removes all of the pet odors. Give your cat plenty of positive attention. Despite the stereotypes that surround felines, cats do bond with their humans. They want our attention and will go to great lengths to get it from us.
